Tomorrow’s business?

I believe the world needs ‘SLOW business’ = sustainable growth. ‘Fast business’ is an unfortunate reality today, especially in the fashion industry where 4 seasons is not enough anymore. The costs on the environment are too high when producing to the increasing numbers of fashion-hungry people worldwide. More wants more? Do we get more quality products or a lot of crap? Did you know it takes 10.000 litres of water to produce one t-shirt? And did you know that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world? So what do we do with all that polluted water? We stop polluting and take responsibility – we change our ways of business. We stop making short termed profit.

We make clean & slow t-shirts (well I do). Which for me is defined as for example fair-trade products, organic cotton, recycling and quality materials that last longer. Slow business means harmonizing with pace and rhythm of nature and human living. And as they also put it at the sloth club: SLOW IS BEAUTIFUL. ;-)

Today I took part in a seminar about “Tomorrows Business”. Here we talked about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability. The seminar was a collaboration between Djøf and IDA. I got invited trough my network Morgendagens Heltinder (tomorrows heroines). Thanks.

A long list of participants and 4 speakers made this day a very interesting and giving day. I especially enjoyed and benefited from the knowledge Swedish Per-Uno Alms from RespectEurope shared with us about how implementing CSR and Sustainable business can work as growth indicator for any company.

He quoted Alvin Toffler: “Learn, unlearn and relearn”. Resistance to change often comes from people sitting in management too long who simply refuse or can’t unlearn and relearn. Some truth I have seen too often in Danish companies. So I say: get rid of ‘old people’ that got ‘old and rigid’ in their minds – not willing to change, nor willing to find new possibilities for the world they participate in. Cause sustainable business is full of possibilities for growth. Just need to know the rules of the new game.

The first rule we need to know to act correctly toward sustainability is: Everything spreads and nothing disappears. The second is: Nature’s laws are non-negotionable. We can’t just use and consume. We have to give back. In this part of the world we have knowledge, we have wealth and we have creative powers - and much more to give. And with the internet we can share easily.

The nature is tired, exhausted and needs all the innovative forces we can bring about to make the world a cleaner place for future generations and ourselves. How can we meet the rising demands for a more sustainable world? When we make business we have to ask ourselves 3 questions: 1. Does it make any sense? 2. Do we need it? 3. Can we help nature why doing so? Why care about nature? Cause nature is our heart and lungs.

The people behind Flowmarket talks about 3 challenges: 1. Mans relation to oneself 2. Mans relation to society 3. Mans relation to nature. Taking in consideration these 3 parameters, we can bring FLOW into our business and the world around us.

As a consumer we should judge a product on its level of sustainability. We can afford that.

The people with resources to make a difference are you and me. We have the power (money & opportunity). How can buying organic wear help the world? Well the more you choose organic in your daily life, the more traditional farmers and other industries will change into organic production. Do you agree?
